The Tidewater Scottish Rite LEGO Social Skill Group will meet twice a week and will run from June 20 through July 20 at the Lions Child Study Center.

The children will work as a group and take on different roles throughout the five-week program. A child might be the “engineer” in charge of a building plan on one day and the “builder” on another day.

That’s going to provide them a lot of opportunities to resolve conflict.”
Four first-year master’s student clinicians will help facilitate communication and problem-solving, Genrich说.
“They’re not in t在这里 to step in and solve a problem for them but really to guide them to the answer and just to encourage those kinds of connections,她解释道. “We’re not trying to have the students communicate in a way that’s inauthentic to them.
“Autistic people communicate in a different way. We’re not going to be mandating eye contact or saying you have to have a certain number of follow-up questions or anything like that. It’s really about finding a way that works for them and helping them to pick up on all those social cues.”
The Tidewater Scottish Rite Speech & 语言基础公司. is providing funding to help offset the cost of the program for parents. The Scottish Rite’s association with ODU dates back to 1989. Since then, the foundation has provided roughly $1.75 million for the Communication Sciences and Disorders Program.
